Issue 10: Jackie Mittoo – ‘The Keyboard King at Studio One’ (2000)

For those in the northern hemisphere, summer’s on its way. Hopefully. So, time to go keyboard-to-keyboard with this Jamaican lege – apparently once described by The Guardian as ‘the coolest man who ever lived’.

Now he might not be number one, but Jackie’s certainly up there. His blend of ska, rocksteady and reggae would be a great soundtrack to Sean Connery chomping a cucumber sarnie on the beach set of  ‘Dr. No’.

For now though, the funky tunes are just the thing to help me craft some perky social posts and web copy. The choppy rhythms and keyboard melodies give a structure for some interesting word patterns.

Short sentences. Sentences that sort of bob up and down a bit. And some that go on a while, because there’s quite a lot of important stuff to say and it’s nice to be able to stretch the TOV. Annnd breathe.

This compilation was released by the incomparable @SoulJazzRecordsLtd and collects various recordings Mittoo made in the 60s and early 70s at the legendary Studio One.

Not heard it? Then as track one says, ‘Get Up And Get It’. It’s your licence to chill  🎹 🥒
